The general teaching of Christianity today places the responsibility on the man to believe the gospel to be eternally saved. However, we see from two separate responses to the gospel in Acts 13 where unregenerate blaspheming Jews manifested that they were not among God’s children. Those who believed did not gain eternal life, but those who had previously been “ordained to eternal life” believe the message of their salvation. From these two examples, we see that belief of the gospel is evidentiary, not causative of the salvation of sinners.
