The Good Samaritan is a story that is oftentimes presented as just a good moral lesson, but its meaning goes much deeper than that. This parable shows that God exalts true mercy in action over religious pretense and ceremony. Those who were perceived to be religious passed by on the other side of the man injured in the ditch. But one man, the unlikely Samaritan, came and showed the mercy of God to a man who would hate him (if he had been conscious). He showed the mercy of God to another, and God requires us to love mercy in the same manner.
