Sola Fide’s Hostile Witness

The teaching of “sola fide” – that we are only justified before God “by faith alone” – has its most hostile witness in the principle example of justification by faith, Abraham. Some might say that Abraham was not truly saved between Gen. 12-15 until he placed faith in God in Gen. 15:6. However, the testimony of scripture shows that Abraham was exhibiting faith in God, worship, prayer, and other evidences of his regenerated faith long before he was declared as justified by faith in Gen. 15:6. As we see from Abraham, faith is the expression of the new birth we have already received, not the final seal that secures our eternal salvation.
