The gospel is often presented as the means by which eternal life is gained. However, we see from the scriptures the gospel does not give “life” – life is only given by “the life” Jesus Christ – but the gospel instead illuminates the reality of our salvation. It brings life and immortality “to light”, giving us clarity of vision by illuminating the finished work of salvaiton that was accomplished by Jesus Christ on the cross. When we hear and believe the gospel, that does not save us eternally to heaven, but it does give us peace and assurance in our hearts that we are “already saved” by Jesus Christ.
