How do we reconcile the scriptural doctrine of unconditional election with the statement in John 3:16 that God loved the world? As we study scripture, we will soon realized that not every time the word “world” is used, rarely is it referring to the entire world without exception. If we examine the context of John 3, we will find that Jesus’ use of world in his conversation with Nicodemus is not speaking of all mankind without exception, but rather that God loves a people beyond just the Jews, including out of the whole “Gentile world”.
